about

Thomas Vanz's debut album, Colours of Invisible.

For Thomas Vanz, the notions of microscopically small and limitlessly vast are one and the same. As a filmmaker, his work has dealt with such phenomena as a supernova (the explosion of a star, producing more light than billions of other stars combined) and an imagination of how one might experience falling into a black hole; the former achieved by filming drops of ink in water, and the latter by looking at macroscopic chemical reactions.

In both cases, his method of conveying the incomprehensibly large is to look at the minutiae in front of us. It’s no surprise then that his debut album Colours of Invisible opts for a simple instrumental palette, and in doing so crafts a sonic world that is anything but.

The album opens with a short sequence of cascading triplets played lightly on the piano - compact, but in possession of a vast acoustic depth. Across fifteen tracks he uses the piano as his primary voice, performing pointillistic melodies and minimalist harmonic cycles that expand over time, meditating on the timbre of the instrument whilst alluding to far broader thematic motifs. Existing outside of regulated metre and performed with virtuosic flair, his compositions breathe and modulate with a wandering spirit.

Thematically, Colours of Invisible is grounded by the notion of ‘being under the microscope’, and delves into this in a multitude of ways. Whilst Thomas’ mission is to find moments of meaning and spiritual grace amidst the invisible, he is aware of the inherent limitations in such a pursuit, accepting that mysteries will remain mysteries, and mindful that a goal to provide finite answers or conclusions would be naive. Instead, the aim is to create a vessel into these moments of abstract cosmic fusion, both hopeful and emotive.

Having worked on projects for Christian Dior, Ólafur Arnalds, Ateliers De Lumieres, and Citroën Automotive amongst others, Thomas has incorporated his passion for astrophysical theories into an accomplished range of contexts, and whilst his work is conceptually vast, the beauty in his music is an ability to distil the infinite into snapshots of meaning and miracle.

Colours of Invisible is the universe in a teacup, forever in awe at the universe around us, and comfortable in its aim to search for singular moments amidst the chaos.
